The Ins and Outs of
WRITING SCENES
ONLINE FROM ALMOST ANYWHERE
Writers of all Levels are Welcome
We will start the day with a warm up exercise and then get into an exploration of plot--what it is and isn't. Then we'll examine the 8 elements of story that will help you develop a long form narrative--such as a novel, screenplay, or memoir--that works!
Midway through we'll take a 45-minute lunch break. By the end of the session you'll have a solid understanding of plot and be well underway with your own plotting process.
The event will be recorded and accessible to participants after the event date.

Let's write some scenes!
Scenes are the building blocks of story, and knowing how to write them is essential to the writer’s craft.
Though scene writing is more art than science, there are some tools and tips that can help you shape compelling, dynamic scenes.
In this short class we'll focus on the functions of scenes and how to use them effectively to bring your story to life.
We will cover:
~ what scenes are and what they must do
~ the differences between scene and summary and how to strike a balance
~ two different scene types and when and how to use them
~ and a few more things...
The class will be structured to allow for two 10-min breaks. The last half hour will be for Q&A.
At the end of the class, I'll offer a follow up series of two "Scene Saturdays" for a small group who would like to workshop one of their scenes.
Requirements:
* A computer with wifi access to connect to the live calls.
* Access to the Zoom platform.
* A notebook and pen for exercises and notes.
* You might want a pair of headphones.
"April's scene class was so helpful for me as I edited my first novel. She carefully explains the differences between types of scenes and when it makes sense in the service of your story to use each. Applying what I learned to every one of my scenes made a huge difference in my book."
